WHAT ARE POLYNORMES ?

PolyNormes belong to a family of three complementary test apparatus in the field of reaction to fire for the french M classification of building and fitting materials.

 

WHY ARE THEY NAMED POLYNORMES ?

Because they correspond to apparatus to perform tests according methods subjected to standards in the series of NF P 92-501 to NF P 92-512. Besides, PolyNormes are designated by the last three figures of these standards (for example : PolyNorme 503 for the electrical burner test apparatus according to NFP P 92-503).

 

WHAT IS THE M CLASSIFICATION ?

The M classification gathers a certain number of test methods to label the building and fitting materials according their reaction to fire. Those materials are in this manner shared out in the categories M0, M1, M2, M3, M4 and if the case arises unclassified. Materials are listed depending on their flexibility and their thickness. Floorings are subjected to a separate classification by means of a specific test method like radiant panel test, possibly completed by the radiation test.

 

IS THE M CLASSIFICATION STILL VALID ? (LNE source)

The new « arrêté » dated 11/21/2002 which replaces the « arrêté » dated 30th of June 1983 modified on the 28th of August 1991, settles the test methods and the classification categories concerning the reaction to fire of building and fitting materials. The general present arrangements relating to safety against fire for the building products and the fitting materials are still based on the M classification. However the Euroclasses can be used from now on for the building products as a proof method of conformity for the building products to the requirements of the french regulations in the same way as the M classification, thanks to equivalences between the both classification systems. In the future, Euroclasses will substitute for the M classification as soon as the european harmonized product standards will be published. Bear in mind that only a french accredited laboratory like LNE can issue the M classification but also these Euroclasses as long as the harmonized product standards are not published.

 

WHAT ARE POLYNORMES USEFUL FOR ?

PolyNormes allow a manufacturer to make sure of the M classification level of a new product before sending it to an accredited laboratory for certification and then to control the quality consistency of the production. This procedure is particularly significant when the manufacturer produces in a foreign country and wants to sell his product in France.

WHAT ARE THE THREE MODELS OF POLYNORMES ?

PolyNorme 503 performs the electrical burner test according to NF P 92-503. It is the main reaction to fire test for M classification of the building and fitting materials. It is used for flexible materials with a thickness lower than or equal to 5 mm, for tight fitting flexible wall and ceiling coatings of any thickness and for flexible filtering media of any thickness. PolyNorme 503 is also employed to study the burning behaviour of industrial fabrics such as marquees, large tents and related products according to NF EN 14115.

 

PolyNorme 504 carries out the flame persistency and propagation test according to NF P 92-504. This apparatus is multi-purpose. For example, it is used for the flame persistency test which is complementary to the electrical burner test when it is noticed there some holing without inflammation or with short time inflammation of the test piece. The same, the flame persistency test is complementary to the radiant test with epiradiator cabinet according to NF P 92-501 when it is noticed there some holing without inflammation or with short time inflammation of a test piece of flexible material with a thickness higher than 5 mm or rigid material of any thickness. In the last two cases, the flame persistency test becomes the deciding test for M classification of the material. At last, PolyNorme 504 is useful for the flame propagation test for M4 classification of flexible and rigid materials of any thickness.

 

PolyNorme 505 achieves the dripping test used for termalmelting materials according to NF P 92-505 in conjunction with the main electrical burner test or the main radiant test or also the complementary flame persistency test when some uninflamed or inflamed dripping were noticed there. The classification obtained at the previous test is maintained or the material is downgraded after the dripping test according to whether there was some uninflamed or inflamed dripping during the previous test.

 

A.I.S. PARTNER OF L.N.E. ?

Company A.I.S. made a partnership agreement with L.N.E. (Laboratoire National d’Essais) in which L.N.E. granted A.I.S. to manufacture and to market, in France and in foreign countries, PolyNormes 503, 504 and 505 according the L.N.E.’s drawings, possibly modified by A.I.S. with L.N.E. acceptance, who guarantees the conformity of the apparatus to the test standards.

Exclusive agent for France of the manufacturer F.T.T., A.I.S sells also the five apparatus correlated to Euroclasses, namely :

The non-combustibility furnace (NF EN ISO 1182)
The calorimetric bomb (NF EN ISO 1716)
The SBI test apparatus – Single Burner Item (NF EN 13823)
The single-flame ignitability apparatus (NF EN ISO 11925-2)
The radiant panel (NF EN ISO 9239-1)
