Design and marketing of the electrical burner test apparatus are subjected to a partnership with LNE (Laboratoire National d’Essais).


The electrical burner test according to NF P 92-503 is the reaction to fire main test for M classification of building and fitting materials. It is used for flexible materials with a thickness lower than or equal to 5 mm, for tight fitting flexible wall and ceiling coatings of any thickness and for flexible filtering media of any thickness.

In principle, if the duration of inflammation after withdrawing the pilot flame does not exceed 5 s, the material can be M1 classified. Beyond 5 s of inflammation, the M2 or M3 classification will be made according to the average distance of charring or destruction and possibly also the average width of charring or destruction of the test piece. In case of inflamed or not dripping, the dripping test (NF P 92-505) is carried out. If there is some holing without inflammation or with short time inflammation, classification is obtained after performing the flame persistency test (NF P 92-504).

The electrical burner test apparatus is also employed to study the burning behaviour of industrial fabrics such as canvas covers, large tents, marquees, related structures, air ducts and so on according to NF EN 14115.



The electrical burner test involves submitting, under defined conditions, the test piece to the action of a heat radiation and hot gases sweeping the surface of the test piece, thus enabling the progress and the propagation of the flame. A pilot flame produced by a batwing burner supplied with propane gas is applied at at times scheduled by the standard and is used to ignite the evolved gases and possibly cause the inflammation of the material.

For each test, the time to inflammation, the persistence of the flame, the nature and the effects of combustion are noted.


At the early beginning, LNE designed an apparatus fitted with automatization in order to make easier the carrying-out of a test while assuring a good repeatability of the results. In fact, the manual operating sequence to be done by the user requires from him skill and watchfulness relieved by the apparatus automatization :

• Quickly place the grill fitted with with the test piece on the test piece holder grill facing to the electrical burner.
• Simultaneously start the stopwatch (zero-time of test).
• Immediately lower the incombustible plate onto the grill pins.
• 20 seconds after the the start of testing, rotate the inflammation system in such a way to bring the pilot flame into the contact position under the test piece and hold it in position for 5 s, then withdraw it.
• Repeat this action 45 s after the start of testing, then every 30 s for at least 5 min, excepted if the material burns ; in this case, it’s necessary to wait until the material is extinguished in order to reapply the pilot flame at the next application time set out in the standard.
• During the test, note the time of inflammation and its duration after withdrawing the pilot flame.

PolyNorme 503 apparatus allows to perform automatically all the operating sequence including recording of the flame duration determined by push-button activation. Moreover, company A.I.S. improved the equipment by replacing the original data acquisition control box by a computerized system with PC and software



The electrical burner test apparatus model PolyNorme 503 is made of the following elements :

• A metal frame comprising a pedestal and two posts inclined of 30° over which comes to fall the test piece holder mechanism. This one includes the test piece holder grill and the insulating incombustible plate designed to cover the test piece after it has been set up and used to channel the hot gases coming from the test piece. The inflammation system comprises a batwing burner supplied with propane gas, welded to a metallic pipe which swivels round an axis fixed to the pedestal. In contact position, the flame shall come into contact with the lower face of the test piece. A ball flowmeter to be inserted in the gas supply circuit is used to measure the gas flow corresponding to the flame height according standard specifications.

• A 500 W electrical burner comprises a ceramic body in which is accommodated a removable sleeve in porous ceramic ; this one is fitted with an electrical resistance and contains a helical metal device designed to homogenize the air temperature. The electrical burner is fixed on a metal pedestal pierced by holes to enable air to enter and circulate inside the sleeve and leave by the upper section. The whole, fully complying NF P 92-503 of 1995, can be delivered with a calibration certificate issued by an accredited laboratory (in addition). A screen plate made of incombustible material is fixed on the apparatus frame and has a hole suitable for the electrical burner to pass through ; it also comprises a rectangular opening on a side enabling the flow of fresh air.

• An automation control box (common to PolyNormes 503 and 504) with push-button control takes over the control instructions of the test configured and initialized by software ; it transfers in real time to the PC, by RS 232 connection, the durations of inflammation taken by the push-button after each withdrawing of the pilot flame.

• The data acquisition and control software named « FEU » can be used equally well for PolyNorme 503 or PolyNorme 504 operation. Recognition of the apparatus is done by switching it on. From then on, the software transmits to the automation control box the instruction for test initialization. If the test piece holder mechanism is not in initial position at the test start, an error message is displayed and the test does not start. The software acquires durations of inflammation taken by the push-button after each withdrawing of the pilot flame. A report is edited at the test end comprising heading, data and final comments on each test piece.

• A low voltage (L.V.) transformer 220 V / 48 V with voltmeter for the electrical burner supply is included at the delivery. On the other hand, it is compulsory to get an autotransformer in order to adjust the serviceable voltage to the value given in the official calibration certificate.

N.B. Are not included in the supply of the PolyNorme 503, a pressure reducer with manometer and a flowmeter for propane gas control, nor autotransformer and voltage stabilizer (if necessary), nor a PC-type microcomputer, nor a hood which are usually available in a laboratory. Nevertheless, it is still possible to get these accessories on request.
